Oral Maxillofacial Surgery

What is Oral Maxillofacial Surgery?

Oral maxillofacial surgery is a branch of specialized dentistry that came about from oral surgery. Oral maxillofacial surgeons perform a variety of intraoral and extraoral surgery that could involve part of the neck, jaws, sinuses, foreheads, etc. Most patients are referred to maxillofacial surgeons for even simplest extractions, however the most demanding maxillofacial surgery operations are normally teeth that are fully impacted and are otherwise hidden from the visible eye.

Is it painful?

The procedures should not be painful, although some are aggressive,  and the patient will only have minor to moderate post-operative pain. Medication can be administered for pain.

Sedation dentistry can be used for oral maxillofacial surgery if needed.

What else is involved with Oral Maxillofacial Surgery?

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons also care for patients that have facial pain and misaligned jaws. They treat accident victims suffering facial injuries, care for patients with oral cancer, tumors and cysts of the jaws, and perform facial cosmetic surgery.

Common reasons to use services of a maxillofacial surgeon in dentistry:

  • Wisdom teeth extraction
  • Difficult extractions (tooth removal) from severely impacted teeth
  • Dental implant placement
